There are many prominent people in the Gothic and Alternative genres. May of them are known for how well they have fit in, and others are known because they have created their own space.
RetroKitten recently had the great honour of interviewing one of the latter. Donna Ricci is not only a well known and instantly recognizable presence on the scene, but she is actively involved in helping the scene grow and evolve with her own projects.
Here then, are Ten Questions with Donna Ricci
RK: This will seem like an obvious first question, but how DID you get started modeling?
Donna Ricci: My mother wanted me to follow in her footsteps. Before I had become my own person to decide what *I* wanted to do, it was too late. I fallen in love with it.
RK: You are one of the best known names in the gothic/alternative modeling world. To what do you credit your popularity and longevity?
Donna Ricci: Being too stubborn to give up, making friends with the people I've been fortunate enough to work with, and loving the subculture enough to give back to it as often as I can.
RK: You are the driving force behind "Wicked Talent". What was your motivation for creating that site?
Donna Ricci: I had been scammed too many times myself, and wanted to have a company I would respect if I worked with them. I really do love meeting all the new models out there, and even the well known faces. Something about paying back the kharmic circle feels so good.
So many models would ask me advice, and I thought there was a way to help on a broader scale.
RK: The cultural climate seems to have been changing lately, becoming a lot more conservative. Have you noticed this? If so, how has it affected you and your projects?
Donna Ricci: We've seen so many more accomplishments now that even mainstream fashion photographers want edgier looking models in their projects. I couldn't be more pleased to see my hopes lived out in front of me.
RK: Where do you see alternative community in ten years?
Donna Ricci: Well, history dictates that everything comes back around every 10 years so I suppose it'll be right where it is now, but perhaps with more wrinkles.
RK: Where do you see yourself in ten years?
Donna Ricci: Definitely with more wrinkles.
RK: Cat Person or Dog Person?
Donna Ricci: Puddies! Definitely! I have 4 and work with two local animal shelters, and one big cat rescue.
RK: Whenever people ask me about women in the alternative industry who do more than model, I always mention people like Josie Nutter, Ashely Fontenot, and of course, Donna Ricci. Woman are taking a much more prominent place in the industry as it evolves. What advice do you have for women with an interest in the alternative genres, just starting out.
Donna Ricci: I would say research everyone you intend to work with, set personal goals and never let anyone talk you out of them, and finally, be safe! The Wicked Talent site has interviews with experts like Dita Von Teese, Justice Howard and Octavio about how to get started.
RK: What do you love most about the alternative industry, what do you HATE most about it?
Donna Ricci: I love the fashions, the artistic people, the projects and the fun. There's a lot of diversity to be found amongst a small subculture.
What do I hate? Hmmm, I think the people who are in it for themselves and at the cost of others.
RK: Ten questions doesn't even scratch the surface, do you have a parting shot, comment, insult or advice before we scurry off?
Donna Ricci: Well, I'd really love to take a moment to thank you, the magazines, the models, the clothing companies, the artists and the photographers who have worked with Wicked Talent models and myself. You've all made this an enjoyable experience that I have never regretted.
We would once again like to thank the Lovely and Talented Donna Ricci for gracing us with her time. We highly recommend Wicked Talent and of course her own site Donna Ricci, Gothic Super Model. We are looking forward to watching her career and projects evolve!
